What Other Animals in Amboseli National Park other than Elephants

What other wildlife can visitors expect to see in Amboseli National Park besides the famous elephants? I’m especially interested in both big game and lesser-known species worth looking out for.

Elephants get the headlines, but Amboseli supports a full range of savannah wildlife.

1. Lions. Present but less visible than in the Masai Mara. Amboseli’s lions tend to stay in the bushy areas. Early morning drives offer the best chance of seeing them.

2. Cheetahs. The open plains suit cheetahs well. I’ve seen male coalitions hunting together and females raising cubs in the short grass. They’re easier to spot here than in many other parks.

3. Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and hyena. All common. The buffalo herds can be enormous.

4. Rhinos. This is the one gap. Amboseli has a very small rhino population. If seeing the Big Five is your priority, Lake Nakuru National Park or Ol Pejeta Conservancy are better bets.

For first-time safari travelers, Amboseli is an excellent choice. The open terrain makes wildlife easy to find, and the elephant sightings are virtually guaranteed.
