Hi everyone,
I’ve booked a 5-day safari in the Maasai Mara. I’ll be flying into Nairobi, spending one day there, then heading to the Mara.
After the safari, I’ll have about 4 days left and would love to unwind at the coast—mainly beaches, relaxation, and maybe a few activities.
I’m trying to decide between:
For those who’ve been, which would you recommend for a post-safari experience? I’m looking for beautiful beaches, good accommodation options, and a relaxing vibe (not too crowded, but not too isolated either).
Also, how easy is it to get to each from Nairobi or the Mara?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
Great plan—combining the Maasai Mara with the coast is honestly one of the best ways to experience Kenya.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time along the coast (multiple trips over the years), and the truth is: there’s no single “best” option—it depends on the kind of ending you want after your safari. But with only 4 days, some choices make more sense than others.
Here’s a practical breakdown based on real travel experiences:
If this is your first time in Kenya, Diani is the safest bet. Long, white sandy beach (arguably the most “postcard-perfect” in Kenya). Plenty of resorts, villas, and beachfront stays. Easy to organize activities (snorkeling, dhow trips, even skydiving). Good mix of lively but still relaxing.
👉 Why it works after a safari:
After days of early game drives, Diani gives you that effortless “switch off and relax” vibe without needing to plan much.
Watamu feels more laid-back and less commercial than Diani. Excellent snorkeling/diving in Watamu Marine National Park. Beautiful spots like Mida Creek (great for sunsets). Smaller, more boutique feel.
👉 Best if you want:
A calm, scenic environment with a bit of exploration—not just lying on the beach.
Nyali is close to Mombasa and very accessible. Easy logistics (no long transfers). More local, public beach experience. Good for a quick stop.
👉 Reality check:
For a dedicated 4-day beach stay after a safari, it’s not the best choice—it’s busier and less “escape-like.”
Lamu is completely different from the others. No cars—just donkeys, boats, and walking. Rich Swahili culture and history (especially Lamu Old Town). Very quiet, almost timeless atmosphere
Important:
It’s magical—but logistically more complex and slower-paced. With only 4 days, it can feel rushed unless you really want that cultural experience.
From Nairobi or the Mara:
##👍 My honest recommendation
For your specific plan (Mara + 4 days beach):
👉 I would skip Nyali for this itinerary
👉 Only pick Lamu if culture and uniqueness matter more than convenience.
